OA Black Feather Ceremony

This Ceremony is preformed in remembrance of a member of the OA. We perform this ceremony at the end of a closing at an Ordeal. The best way is to perform only one ceremony per event. Best time for this to be done is when everyone forms a circle to sing the song of the order. The person who is performing this should be dressed out in all black (leggings, moccasins, gloves, breechcloth, shirt, and headdress) with white accents (belt, armbands, and leg bands) and one Black feather.

As we are gathered here together in friendship and fellowship, our thoughts should travel to and linger on the very ideals that our brotherhood was founded. Wimachatendienk, Wingolausik, Witahemui.

Our Brotherhood can not be seen with your eyes, can not be touched by your hand.

But with your heart can be seen and felt clearly.

Just as the dawn breaking the darkness of the night.

Just as the warmth of the noon sun can be felt but not touched.

As the North Star shows us the right direction to travel, so should this brotherhood direct and guide us on the path through our journey of life.

As we travel this path of cheerful service, we meet many brothers who inspire, lead and blaze a trail for us to follow.

They do this with mind, body, heart, and spirit. With action not words hey lead by example. We all look to them for guidance and admire them for their giving spirit.

There is such a brother who is missing from us tonight. (Vigil Name and meaning or full name of person being honored) traveled this path of cheerful service and will be missed by us all.

A single black feather is put into the fire (some Magnesium shavings in plastic wrap and taped to the base of the feather adds to the ceremonies effect at this point).

As this smoke curls, winding up to the heavens, may (full name of person being honored) many actions and deeds always guide us, the path they traveled always direct us, and his/her spirit up lift us all.

Pause quietly while looking at the fire then exit slowly.

This Ceremony can also be done for a non-OA member with a few changes.

As we are gathered here together in friendship and fellowship, our thoughts should travel to and linger on our Scouting pledges.

To do our duty to God and Country.

To obey the Scout Law.

To help other people at all times.

To keep ourselves Physically strong mentally awake and morally straight.

As we travel this path of Scouting pledges, we meet many fellow scouts who inspire, lead and blaze a trail for us to follow.
